Isara, a voyage around Essay By Wole Soyinka
The contents of a tin box – a handful of letters; old journals with marked pages and annotations; school reports; notebook jottings; tax and other levy receipts; minutes of meetings; and programme notes of special events – which belonged to his father, S. A. (“Essay”) Soyinka, a school teacher during the colonial period in Nigeria, provide the grist for Isara: A Voyage Around Essay, the second instalment of Wole Soyinka’s memoirs – a son’s fictionalised “voyage” into the life and times of his father.
A well written account of childhood in pre independence Yorubaland. Although it is probably not typical, it illustrates the essence of the Yoruba parenting style, a style that makes every adult a parent and every child dutiful. I recommend it.

jasmine – A Caterpillar in a cocoon (Patience)
We had become airplanes touring the neighborhood with our arms stretched out. Then we saw the garbage truck. It all happened when the runway narrowed. I lost my balance and fell on the tarmac. Zeynep was okay. She run to bring help.

jasmine – I caught you (Friendship)
Did you ever stop talking with a friend? I have. It is not nice. Don’t stop being friends… It’s worse than eating hot pepper… It’s a good thing that you can stop being angry and continue being friends. This feels like eating strawberry ice cream. Or cycling downhill.

Jasmine Responsibility- A Blessing in disguise
I ran into my teacher while walking to school the next day. She had quite a few folders and bags in her hands. She had difficulty carrying them. ¨Could you help me, Jasmine?” she asked. I obliged willingly and took a few folders from her. I felt cheerful helping out my teacher. I started hopping towards the teacher’s room. As I was hopping right, left and backwards, I ran into a student. All the folders in my arms dropped on the floor.

Jasmine Responsibility- The Chocolate Factory
I hate going around with these red spots on my face. But I love chocolate. “What does one have to do with the other?” you may ask. Well, if I’m the subject, then unfortunately these two are connected.I hate going around with these red spots on my face. But I love chocolate. “What does one have to do with the other?” you may ask. Jasmine- The Bookworm (Compassion)
I like Derya. She is a bookworm. She always has a book in her hand wherever she goes. In class, during recess, when queuing… She does not take her nose out of a book. Sometimes I snatch her book from her and say, ¨Return to Earth alien, we humans are friends of the aliens!” She chases me until she gets her book back. So, what was going to happen now? Wasn’t she coming back to school? Won’t she be devouring books anymore?

Jasmine- Won’t Give Up Honesty
I ran into my teacher while walking to school the next day. She had quite a few folders and bags in her hands. She had difficulty carrying them. ¨Could you help me, Jasmine?” she asked. I obliged willingly and took a few folders from her. I felt cheerful helping out my teacher. I started hopping towards the teacher’s room. As I was hopping right, left and backwards, I ran into a student. All the folders in my arms dropped on the floor. The girl crouched down, gathering all the papers while apologizing. It was I who should have apologized. ¨I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking,” I said. She was very nice, told me it was not a problem and continued on her way.

Last Train to Biafra is yet another memoir on the Nigeria-Biafran war. The book however is exceptional in the sense that it ranks among the finest memoirs to be written on the Nigerian-Biafran fratricidal conflict, a must-read for every human being on earth. In the words of Dr Onyebuchi Ileh, Head, Department of English and Literature, Nigerian Turkish Nile University, Abuja, the book ‘is the most touching account of the pogrom against the Igbos after the 1966 counter coup.’

Long Walk To Freedom: Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule.

Mandela: The Authorised Biography By Anthony Sampson
In 1975, imprisoned for life on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela covertly wrote his autobiography. After painstaking months the text was smuggled out–and was promptly quashed by the African National Congress. In his later Long Walk to Freedom Mandela politely expresses “surprise” at this. Sampson reveals that Joe Slovo suppressed the book for not giving enough prominence to Communists. This revelation is remarkable–the ANC could have made much mileage from the book at a time of low fortune–yet Sampson does not follow up. There is too often a sense of eggshells lightly walked upon.

Mohandas Gandhi: Essential Writings (Modern Spiritual Masters) by Mahatma Gandhi
Books, Books & Games, Politics & DevelopmentMohandas Gandhi: Essential Writings (Modern Spiritual Masters) by Mahatma Gandhi
Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) is widely acknowledged as one of the great souls of the twentieth century. As the leader of the Indian independence movement he defined the modem practice of nonviolence, wedding an ethic of love to a practical method of social struggle. In the end, however, his philosophy was rooted in a deep spirituality. For Gandhi the struggle for peace and social justice was ultimately related to the search for God. These writings reveal the heart and soul of a man whose life and message bear special relevance to all spiritual seekers.

Nollywood:The Creation of Nigerian Film Genres By Jonathan Haynes
Nigeria’s Nollywood has rapidly grown into one of the world’s largest film industries, radically altering media environments across Africa and in the diaspora. It has also become one of African culture’s most consequential expressions, powerfully shaping how Africans see themselves and are seen by others. With this book, Jonathan Haynes provides an accessible and authoritative introduction to this vast industry and its film culture. Haynes describes the major Nigerian film genres and how they relate to Nigerian society—its values, desires, anxieties, and social tensions. He interprets these generic stories and the cast of mythic figures within them: the long-suffering wives, the business tricksters, the Bible-wielding pastors, the kings in their traditional regalia, the glamorous young professionals, the emigrants stranded in New York or London, and all the rest. Based on more than twenty years of research and with vivid descriptions of Nollywood’s landmark films and leading directors, this is a book of unprecedented scope on a major branch of world cinema.
