IRINKERINDO NINU IGBO ELEGBEJE By D.O Fagunwa (HardCover)
$8.00
The Fagunwa Phenomenon
In 1938, a school teacher, David O. Fagunwa came out with a book entitled Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale. In part because of its novelty, in part because of the richness of language, in part because it treated familiar themes and because it relied heavily on folklores with which people were familiar, Ogboju Ode was an instant success.
Fagunwa’s first novel, Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale (1938; The Forest of a Thousand Daemons), was the first full-length novel published in the Yoruba language. Fagunwa’s works characteristically take the form of loosely constructed picaresque fairy tales containing many folklore elements: spirits, monsters, gods, magic, and witchcraft.
Also because of their classical nature, richness and because of the prolificity of its author, Fagunwa’s books (he wrote four others after Ogboju Ode) became so prodigious that they, for a long time, seemed to overshadow other writings in the same genre. Indeed, it is only recently that many, outside the circle of the educated Yorubas, are beginning to realize that there were indeed some other literary works of note before and during Fagunwa’s ‘reign’. Such was the intensity of leverage the Fagunwa’s works wielded.
The books, in order of publication are:
1. 1938, Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale (Wole Soyinka translated the book into English in 1968 as The Forest of A Thousand Demons).
2. 1940, Irinkerindo Ninu Igbo Elegbeje (Expedition to the Mount of Thought).
3. 1946, Igbo Eledumare (The Forest of God).
4. 1949, Ireke Onibudo.
5. 1963, Adiitu Olodumare.
What a rare collection!
Besides assembling Yoruba folklores and weaving them together to form a composite narrative, Fagunwa, in each of his works, preaches ‘high morals’ from Yoruba cultural perspective as well as Christian ethos. The five works essentially deal with Yoruba traditional society. The first two works centre on how life was lived in pre-colonial Yoruba society. His latter works also consider the traditional society. But this time taking cognizance of the fact that real social and political power has shifted from Obas or traditional chiefs to the colonialists. The Fagunwa phenomenon thus represented the third landmark in the evolution of Yoruba literature.
“Because of its popularity, because of its depth and because of its uniqueness, D.O. Fagunwa’s writing is often regarded by many as the pioneer of Yoruba literature – especially the novels.”

CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO:THE POLITICAL MOSES By Adedara S. Oduguwa
Books, Books & Games, Literature, Politics & DevelopmentCHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO:THE POLITICAL MOSES By Adedara S. Oduguwa
Seller: GrammyBooksChief Obafemi Awolowo: The Political Moses is a story of a man who dedicated the entirety of his life to serve humanity and the development of mankind. The Author makes use of the noun Moses to depict the tiresome journey of an activist who fought rigorously alongside others to gain independence for his people. The fact that his ambition to be president of Nigeria was foiled is in itself a matter of discussion transcending the Nigerian political debate till now. As late Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu once said “Awolowo, the Best President Nigeria never had”.
The book investigates the celebrated treasonable felony of 1962; bringing into focus the case hearings and the political unrest of the period, party system and political parties in Nigeria, Nigeria electoral processes from Pre-colonial era to the fourth republic, review of political prisoners around the world, and making succinct recommendations for Nigeria electoral processes.
Chief Obafemi Awolowo: the political Moses unravels a political betrayer by major party members of Action Group likening this to the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariots. It is a must read book for researchers, students of political science and law, lecturers, and anybody that aspires to be great.

State and Development in Post-Independent Africa By Samuel Oloruntoba
Books, Books & Games, Politics & DevelopmentState and Development in Post-Independent Africa By Samuel Oloruntoba
Seller: GrammyBooksIs the State still relevant for development in contemporary Africa? There have been several scholarly efforts geared toward understanding the role of the State in facilitating socio-economic development in Africa. While some see the State as a benevolent political authority which possesses the necessary mandate and responsibility to advance development, others see it as an area for personal accumulation and rent sharing. Indeed, there have been mixed results on the activities of the State and economic development in Africa over the past five decades of gaining political independence. This book contributes to the debates on the domestic and external forces that have continued to shape the role of the State in fostering socio-economic and political development in post-independent Africa. Contributors to this volume went beyond diagnosis of the challenges facing the continent to proffering solution and charting alternative strategies for achieving inclusive development. Samuel Ojo Oloruntoba, PhD is a Senior Lecturer at the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute, University of South Africa. He is co-editor with Toyin Falola of the Palgrave Handbook of African Politics, Governance and Development, Palgrave Macmillan, New York, 2018. Professor Vusi Gumede, a former Associate Professor at the University of Johannesburg, is the Head of Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute at the University of South Africa researching and publishing in the political economy of development in Africa.
